When the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears met at Soldier Field during the 1985-86 NFL season, the Packers were a team struggling to stay relevant in the NFC. 14 years removed from their last division title, the Packers were just another notch in what would be a championship belt for the Bears. Chicago was on its way to a Super Bowl and on that cold day, they unleashed a new weapon against their rivals when Mike Ditka let William “Refrigerator” Perry carry the ball in a goal line situation. The Fridge scored. To Packer fans, it was embarrassing enough to lose to the Bears. To have their defense mocked was quite another. It was a blow to the dignity that had been a fierce, but respectful rivalry.
How juicy and satisfying would it be, then, to see the Packers’ big as a house nose tackle, B.J. Raji carry the ball against the Bears on Sunday?
Raji’s offensive debut came last week against the Falcons, when he served as the lead blocker for fullback John Kuhn. The two bulldozed a space in the line and Kuhn crashed in for a touchdown. Clearly proud of his new role, Raji celebrated.
Giving Raji the chance to play the role the Fridge played during the Bears’ Super Bowl season and doing it at Soldier Field? Packer fans with long memories would have Packer fans rolling on the floor at the 25-year-old slice of sweet payback.
